Gathering Supplies From the Card
The idea
The preference card lists what a case typically needs, and supplies are gathered from it before the room is opened.
In practice
Work through the card in order. First, confirm the surgeon, the procedure and the patient's scheduled case match the card. Second, gather the instrument sets and check each wrapper's label. Third, gather the supplies to be opened before the case begins. Fourth, gather the supplies that are pulled into the room but left unopened unless they are needed. Fifth, gather sutures, medications and solutions by type and strength. Sixth, confirm equipment and positioning devices on the card are present. Anything missing is reported to the circulating nurse before setup starts.
Where people slip
The card is a guide, not a guarantee. If the scheduled procedure, the patient or the surgeon's plan has changed, the card may not fit, and the scrub person asks before opening supplies that may not be needed.
