Laparoscopic Instruments

Captions available

The idea

Laparoscopic instruments are long, thin versions of open instruments, designed to work through small ports placed through the skin.

In practice

Learn the system piece by piece. First, the insufflator fills the abdomen with carbon dioxide to create working space. Second, a Veress needle is one way to start that insufflation. Third, trocars are the ports placed through the abdominal wall, in several sizes, through which instruments pass. Fourth, the camera, lens and fiber-optic light source show the inside of the abdomen on a monitor; lenses come in several viewing angles and may need defogging. Fifth, long instruments, such as graspers, scissors, dissectors and needle holders, do the work through the ports.

Where people slip

The light cable can become hot enough to burn drapes or skin. Keep it connected to the scope while it is on, and never lay a lit cable on the field.
