The idea
Gynecologic instruments include specula and other instruments designed for the vagina, cervix and uterus.
In practice
A weighted vaginal speculum holds back the posterior vaginal wall without being held by hand; other specula hold the vaginal walls apart to show the cervix.
Where people slip
A weighted speculum is heavy, so place it gently and never leave it where it could fall.
