Positioning Equipment in the Room

Captions available

The idea

Positioning equipment supports and protects the patient in the position the surgery requires.

In practice

Learn the common devices in order from the table outward. First, the operating table itself, which tilts, rises, lowers and rotates. Second, headrests and skull clamps for head and neck surgery. Third, armboards, which attach to the table and are adjusted so the arm's circulation is not compromised. Fourth, stirrups, which support the legs in the lithotomy position. Fifth, bolsters, gel pads and pillows, which keep alignment and spread pressure. Sixth, bean bags and vacuum bean bags, which mold around the patient and hold the position. Seventh, specialty equipment, such as shoulder chairs and traction devices for orthopedic surgery.

Where people slip

Every device is checked before the patient arrives. A missing gel pad or a broken stirrup discovered after induction delays the case or tempts the team to improvise.
