Scale, Two Meanings

Captions available

The idea

Scale is the ratio of length or distance on the map to length or distance on the ground. It can also mean a phenomenon's spatial extent, local to global. Large scale shows a small area in detail; small scale, a large area coarsely.

In practice

One inch to a mile against one to a hundred.

Where people slip

Extent is the human geographers' usual meaning.
