GIS: Layers of Data
Captions available
The idea
A geographic information system combines computer hardware and software to store, analyze and display geographic data with computer mapping in a system of data layers. Roads on one layer, soils on another, population on a third, overlaid to answer a spatial question.
In practice
Where does a floodplain overlap dense housing.
Where people slip
The layers are the point; one map is not a GIS.
