Republicanism Against Democracy
Captions available
The idea
Republicanism held that representatives, not a monarch, should govern, and that citizens owed civic virtue. Democracy meant majority rule, which many leaders feared as mob rule, so voting went to property holders.
In practice
Washington as the model of public virtue the republic prized.
Where people slip
Little changed for women, Black people and native peoples. Coverture erased a married woman's legal identity; citizenship excluded non-White people.
