Social Sciences and History / Unit 1   SSH 0023 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Jefferson: 1800, Louisiana, Marbury

Captions available

The idea

The Quasi-War with France marked the Federalist high tide. The election of eighteen hundred passed power peacefully to Jefferson's party. The Louisiana Purchase of eighteen oh three doubled the nation.

In practice

Marbury against Madison, the same year, established judicial review.

Where people slip

The purchase suited Jefferson's agrarian republic. The Court's power to void laws came from the Court itself, not the Constitution's text.
