Push and Pull

Captions available

The idea

Push factors are forces that encourage people to leave a place; pull factors, forces that draw them to another. Forced migration is movement coerced by external forces, environmental, economic, social or political. Migration is a nexus of movement, not a single one-way move.

In practice

War and drought push; jobs and family pull.

Where people slip

Economic factors are the main reason, Ravenstein's sixth law.
