The idea
Tracing hearing means following a pressure wave from outer ear to eardrum to ossicles to cochlea to hair cells to thalamus to temporal cortex.
In practice
One sound followed the whole distance at honest pace, including the air-to-fluid transfer that requires the middle ear, the frequency separation along the basilar membrane, the transduction at the hair cells, and the point at which frequency has become pitch. No step compressed.
