The idea
The outer ear collects sound waves and the middle ear's three bones amplify and transfer them to the inner ear.
In practice
Vibration of the eardrum moves three small bones that press against the fluid-filled cochlea.
Where people slip
Amplification is necessary because air-to-fluid transfer loses energy. Without it, most sound would not register.
