The idea
The cochlea is the fluid-filled inner ear structure whose basilar membrane vibrates in response to sound.
In practice
A high-frequency tone produces peak vibration near the cochlea's base and a low tone near its far end.
Where people slip
The cochlea does not amplify. It separates frequencies, which is what makes pitch coding possible.
