Sensorineural hearing loss results from damage to hair cells or the auditory nerve.
In practice
Years of loud noise exposure destroy high-frequency hair cells first, and speech becomes hard to follow in crowds.
Where people slip
Amplification does not repair sensorineural loss. Louder input reaches receptors that are no longer there.
