Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 4   MAS 083 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Breathing Rate and Lung Volumes

Captions available

The idea

At rest, an average adult takes roughly twelve to fifteen breaths a minute; one breath is one inhalation and one exhalation.

In practice

A spirometer measures how much air moves in and out of the lungs, and the test is called spirometry.

Where people slip

Lung capacity peaks in early adulthood and declines with age, so results are compared with expected values.
