Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 3   MAS 056 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Two Divisions of the Skeleton

Captions available

The idea

The skeleton has two divisions: the axial skeleton along the body's center and the appendicular skeleton of the limbs.

In practice

The axial skeleton, about eighty bones, includes the skull, spine and ribs; the appendicular skeleton, about one hundred twenty-six bones, includes the limbs and the girdles that attach them.

Where people slip

The shoulder and pelvic girdles belong to the appendicular skeleton, not the axial.
