Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 20 MAS 489 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Choosing a Capillary Site
Captions available
The idea
A capillary sample comes from a heel or a finger, chosen mainly by the patient's age and size.
In practice
Heel punctures are used from birth to about six months; finger punctures are used after that, on the middle or ring finger.
Where people slip
Avoid the thumb and index finger, which may be callused, and the little finger, where the tissue is thin.
