A Weight-Based Practice Order

Captions available

The idea

A third constructed practice order, for a made-up medicine, practices converting a weight in pounds before calculating. It is not dosing information for any real drug.

In practice

The practice order is for ten milligrams per kilogram of a made-up medicine, for a child who weighs forty-four pounds. Step one: the goal unit is milligrams. Step two: write ten milligrams over one kilogram. Step three: add one kilogram over two point two pounds, so kilograms cancel. Step four: add forty-four pounds over one, so pounds cancel. Step five: ten times forty-four is four hundred forty, and four hundred forty divided by two point two is two hundred, so the answer is two hundred milligrams.

Where people slip

Converting pounds to kilograms is where weight-based errors start. Using pounds directly in this practice order would give an answer more than twice too large.
