Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 6 MAS 140 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
A Liquid Practice Order
The idea
A second constructed practice order, for a made-up liquid medicine, lets you practice the method with a liquid. It is not dosing information for any real drug.
In practice
The practice order is for one hundred milligrams of a made-up liquid medicine, and the label says that every five milliliters contains fifty milligrams. Step one: the goal unit is milliliters. Step two: the first fraction is five milliliters over fifty milligrams. Step three: the second fraction is one hundred milligrams over one, so that milligrams cancel. Step four: milliliters remain. Step five: five times one hundred is five hundred, and five hundred divided by fifty is ten, so the answer is ten milliliters.
Where people slip
Liquid labels state strength per a volume, not per milliliter. Read the label's volume carefully: a strength given per five milliliters is a different number from one given per milliliter.
