Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 6   MAS 139 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds

A Tablet Practice Order

Captions available

The idea

A constructed practice order for a made-up medicine lets you practice the method on tablets. It is not dosing information for any real drug.

In practice

The practice order is for fifty milligrams of a made-up medicine, and the bottle supplies tablets of twenty-five milligrams each. Step one: the goal unit is tablets. Step two: the first fraction is one tablet over twenty-five milligrams. Step three: the second fraction is fifty milligrams over one, so that milligrams cancel. Step four: only tablets remain. Step five: one times fifty is fifty, and fifty divided by twenty-five is two, so the answer is two tablets.

Where people slip

Check that the answer is sensible. Two tablets of half the ordered strength makes sense; an answer of twenty tablets would signal a setup error, so stop and recheck before preparing anything.
