Human Growth and Development / Unit 11 HGD 1530 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
STIs: Bacterial, Parasitic, Viral
The idea
People aged fifteen to twenty-four account for almost half of new US sexually transmitted infections. Bacterial infections, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea, and the parasitic infection trichomoniasis are curable with medication, though reinfection is possible. Viral infections include HPV, which can cause genital warts and several cancers; herpes simplex virus, HSV-1 usually oral and HSV-2 usually genital, which recurs; and HIV.
In practice
A student treated for chlamydia with a short course of medication, and told that she could be reinfected.
Where people slip
Untreated chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis can cause infertility, pelvic pain and pregnancy complications, and late syphilis can damage the brain. Many infections cause no symptoms, so testing, not symptoms, reveals them. Exam items ask which infections are curable: bacterial and parasitic ones are; viral ones are managed.
