The idea

A sexually transmitted infection is an infection passed through sexual contact by a virus, bacterium, fungus or parasite; it becomes a sexually transmitted disease when it produces disease.

In practice

HPV and chlamydia, often carried without symptoms.

Where people slip

Because many infections cause no symptoms, a person can transmit an infection without knowing it.
