The idea
HIV causes a flu-like illness, then years without symptoms; untreated, it destroys immunity, and its late stage, AIDS, brings opportunistic infections.
In practice
Antiretroviral therapy lowering viral load until tests cannot detect it: undetectable equals untransmittable.
Where people slip
The misconception is that people with HIV on treatment can still transmit it sexually; an undetectable viral load means no sexual transmission.
