The idea
Chromosome pairs one to twenty-two are autosomes; the twenty-third pair is the sex chromosomes, XX in biological females and XY in biological males.
In practice
Every egg carrying an X; each sperm carrying either an X or a Y.
Where people slip
So the sperm determines the baby's chromosomal sex. An autosome is a chromosome, not a kind of cell.
