Genotype, Allele and Phenotype

Captions available

The idea

A genotype is the set of genes a person inherits, which cannot be directly observed; a phenotype is the observable characteristics.

In practice

Two brown-eyed people, alike in phenotype, one carrying a hidden allele for blue eyes.

Where people slip

An allele is a variant form of a gene. Each person carries two alleles for most genes, one from each parent.
