Generative AI at Work / Unit 9 GAI 208 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
The Invented Rule
The idea
The hospital case's invented reporting rule, all severe incidents are reportable, shows a failure worth a procedure of its own: testing any rule an AI proposes against the real one.
In practice
Step one: write the proposed rule down exactly, with every condition it states. Step two: find the authoritative source: the current policy or regulation, with its version and date. Step three: compare conditions and exceptions one by one; in the case, the real rule depended on the incident type, the level of harm and the policy version, none of which the generated rule mentioned. Step four: take the comparison to the people who own the rule and confirm the correct wording with them. Step five: record the correct rule in the reference documents, so future prompts are grounded in it.
Where people slip
Over-general rules are dangerous because they are usually true somewhere. The method's comment on the case is that such a rule could have had serious compliance consequences, which is why rules are verified, not trusted.
