Hiring and People Decisions
The idea
The method's human-resources playbook puts ethics first: applications, performance reviews and pay records are treated at the highest risk level, and AI may only suggest.
In practice
Step one: AI may parse resumes and suggest a shortlist. Step two: document every place where AI influences an outcome, and which fields feed the model. Step three: require human review for every sensitive decision; final status changes are governed by rules that carry fairness and compliance constraints. Step four: monitor results across groups, because NIST notes that generative AI can amplify existing biases and perform worse for some groups.
Where people slip
Screening errors are silent: the qualified applicant who was filtered out never appears in anyone's review. Monitoring the outcomes is the only way to see them.
