"AI Suggests" or "System Decides"?
The idea
The boundary at the heart of the feature gate separates outputs that are suggestions for a person from outputs the system acts on automatically, and drawing it takes four steps.
In practice
Step one: list every output the AI produces in the process. Step two: for each one, ask what happens next if nobody looks at it. Step three: anything that would change a decision, a record, a status or a message to a customer without a person goes on the system decides side. Step four: move everything on that side behind a human approval, unless the consequence of an error is minor and the team has agreed in writing to automate it.
Where people slip
Boundaries drift as features grow. An AI suggestion that becomes the default, pre-filled and rarely changed, has quietly crossed to the system decides side.
