Evidence-Based Practice / Unit 1 EBP 0067 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Making the Case for Evidence-Based Practice
The idea
The technique: state what EBP is and what it serves, distinguish it from research and from quality improvement, show the size of the research–practice gap, name the barriers that hold it open and the conditions that close it, and set out the seven steps as the work that follows.
In practice
A clinician making the case on their own unit. EBP defined by its three components and its quadruple aim. The gap named at around fifteen years. Barriers identified, three of them organizational rather than personal. Facilitators proposed: expectation from leadership, protected time, a mentor. The seven steps offered as the method, and step zero as where the unit already is.
Where people slip
The case is made to an organization, not to a colleague. Most of the barriers are ones no individual clinician can remove, and a case aimed only at individuals asks the wrong people to fix them.
