The idea
Consistency requires treating like cases alike; giving two cases different verdicts demands a relevant difference between the cases.
In practice
A supervisor docks one late clerk and excuses another. Unless something distinguishes the two latenesses, the two verdicts cannot both be defended, and one has to go.
