Educational Psychology / Unit 11 EDP 1013 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Low-Profile Control
The idea
Low-profile control handles surface behaviors, the minor misbehaviors of daily classrooms, in three moves. Anticipation spots trouble before it starts, from signs such as restlessness late in a period, and adjusts the activity. Deflection redirects a behavior that is beginning, first nonverbally, with a look or a step closer, before any words. Reaction responds to a behavior that has occurred, in rising order: acknowledge a nearby student who is on task, give a warning, then apply a consequence.
In practice
Worked example: late on a Friday, a teacher sees restlessness and switches to a standing activity, which is anticipation. A student starts drumming a pencil; the teacher walks over and stands nearby, which is deflection. The drumming resumes, so the teacher thanks a neighbor for working quietly, then gives a quiet warning, and only then a consequence, which is reaction.
Where people slip
Start with the least intrusive move that works, nonverbal before verbal. Chronic problems that low-profile control cannot handle go to the school counselor or psychologist.
