The Prevention Tradition

The idea
The prevention tradition holds that effective managers are distinguished by what they do before misbehavior; in a study of 27 third-grade teachers, effective managers taught rules and routines methodically in the first three weeks.
In practice
They also monitored closely and applied consequences consistently; less effective managers issued threats without follow-through.
Where people slip
Prevention begins on the first day.
