Educational Psychology / Unit 11 EDP 1010 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Punishment as a Last Resort
Captions available
The idea
Punishment is a last resort: time-out only when attention maintains the behavior, never when escape does; loss of privileges; restitution, repairing the damage; and positive practice, repeatedly practicing the correct behavior.
In practice
A student who runs in the hall walks the hallway correctly several times.
Where people slip
Positive practice means rehearsing the right behavior, not writing essays about the wrong one.
