College Composition / Unit 19 CMP 0462 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Revising a Conclusion
The idea
Revising a conclusion means checking that it reinforces the paper's real point and ends in a way that suits its purpose.
In practice
Work in order. First, check that the conclusion restates the thesis in new words and matches what the body proved. Second, remove any new argument or evidence, moving it into the body if it belongs. Third, check that the ending does more than summarize: it should show significance, draw a conclusion, look ahead, or recommend action, whichever fits the purpose. Fourth, check that the final sentence is strong and specific, not a vague generality. Fifth, read the introduction and conclusion together to see that they frame the same argument.
Where people slip
The final sentence matters most, because it is the last thing readers hold. A conclusion that trails into a broad statement, such as one about all of society, weakens the specific point the paper made.
