Revising an Introduction

Captions available

The idea

Revising an introduction often comes last, because the final thesis and the body's real argument are known only after drafting.

In practice

Work in order. First, compare the introduction's thesis with what the body actually argues, and revise the thesis to match. Second, check that the opening hook connects to that thesis, not to an earlier version of the paper. Third, cut background the body does not need, and add any the thesis depends on. Fourth, check the transition from context to thesis. Fifth, confirm that the introduction names the central issue, so readers know from the start what the paper is about.

Where people slip

Introductions written first often promise a different paper from the one that was finished. Rewriting the introduction to fit the final draft is normal and usually necessary.
