Dangling Modifiers

Captions available

The idea

A dangling modifier describes something that is not named in the sentence at all, so it attaches to the wrong word.

In practice

"Walking down the street, the rain started" makes the rain the walker, because the person walking never appears.

Where people slip

Dangling modifiers usually open the sentence; check that the word right after the comma is the one doing the action.
