The idea
A misplaced modifier is a describing word or phrase placed where it seems to describe the wrong thing.
In practice
"We saw a deer driving to work" suggests the deer was driving; "Driving to work, we saw a deer" puts the phrase beside its target.
Where people slip
Place a modifier next to the word it describes; the closer the better.
