College Composition / Unit 6   CMP 0132 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Parallel Structure

The idea

Parallelism means giving related ideas the same grammatical form, which creates balance and makes them easier to remember.

In practice

Items joined by and or or, or compared in a pair, should match: nouns with nouns, phrases with phrases, clauses with clauses.

Where people slip

Faulty parallelism is a frequent revision item, because one item usually sounds acceptable alone.
