The idea
The quotient rule for logarithms turns a quotient's log into a difference of logs: log_b(M/N) = log_b(M) − log_b(N).
In practice
log₂(32/4) = log₂(8) = 3, and log₂(32) − log₂(4) = 5 − 2 = 3 — quotients in, differences out.
