Meiosis is preceded by an interphase with G1, S, and G2 phases nearly identical to mitotic interphase, replicating each chromosome into two sister chromatids before division begins.

A diploid cell entering meiotic S phase copies every chromosome, so meiosis I begins with duplicated, not single, chromosomes.
Watch for
The two meiotic divisions that follow share this one replication — neither division replicates DNA again.
