The idea
A locus is a gene's specific position on a chromosome; homologous chromosomes are a matched pair, one from each parent, carrying the same genes at the same loci.
In practice
Each of a person's 23 chromosome pairs is homologous, one member inherited from each biological parent.
Where people slip
Homologous chromosomes carry the same genes at matching loci, not necessarily the same alleles there.
