Photosystem I absorbs light to re-energize the arriving electron, then passes it to NADP+, reducing it to NADPH for use in the Calvin cycle.
In practice
NADPH built at photosystem I carries its high-energy electron to the light-independent reactions, playing the role NADH plays in cellular respiration.
Where people slip
Photosystem I does not replace its own electron by splitting water — only photosystem II does that.
