The idea
Facilitated transport moves a substance down its existing concentration gradient with the help of a membrane protein, using no cellular energy.
In practice
Polar molecules and ions the membrane's hydrophobic core would otherwise block instead pass through with a transport protein's help.
Where people slip
Facilitated transport stays passive — the gradient supplies the movement, and the protein only removes the membrane's obstacle.
