The endomembrane system is a group of organelles — nuclear envelope, ER, Golgi, lysosomes, vesicles, plasma membrane — modifying, packaging, and transporting lipids and proteins.

A protein made in the ER can travel by vesicle to the Golgi, then to the plasma membrane, without leaving this network.
