The spinal cord's cross section shows gray matter, holding neuron and interneuron cell bodies, surrounded by white matter, holding myelinated axons that carry signals to and from the brain.

Dorsal cord regions carry mostly sensory information toward the brain; ventral regions carry mostly motor signals away.
Watch for
Spinal nerves do not regenerate on their own once severed, unlike some peripheral tissue.
