Leaf Arrangement: Phyllotaxy
Captions available
The idea
Phyllotaxy names a plant's characteristic leaf arrangement: alternate or spiral leaves place one per node, opposite leaves place two, and whorled leaves place three or more.
In practice
A plant with opposite phyllotaxy shows two leaves emerging at each node, positioned directly across from each other.
Where people slip
Phyllotaxy is species-characteristic, not universal — each species keeps one consistent pattern rather than mixing arrangements freely.
