Simple versus Compound Leaves
Captions available
The idea
A simple leaf has one undivided or lobed blade; a compound leaf divides fully into leaflets attached to a shared rachis.
In practice
A banana leaf is simple and undivided; a locust leaf is compound, its blade split into many leaflets along the rachis.
Where people slip
A compound leaf's leaflets are not themselves separate leaves — the whole cluster counts as one leaf at its base.
