A root's endodermis, sealed by a waxy Casparian strip, forces water and solutes through cell membranes rather than between cells, screening entry into vascular tissue.

The Casparian strip blocks toxins and pathogens from slipping between cells while still admitting water the plant needs.
Watch for
The root cap protects the growing tip and is replaced continuously — a separate structure from the endodermis inside.
