A monocot embryo carries one seed leaf, parallel leaf veins, and scattered vascular bundles; a eudicot carries two seed leaves, net-veined leaves, and ringed bundles.

No single trait is definitive — check vein pattern and cotyledon number together, since floral counts (three versus four-or-five) have exceptions.
