Southern and Northern Blotting

This video presents the same text shown beside it, spoken and on screen. It adds nothing the text does not say.

State

Blotting transfers electrophoresis-separated fragments onto a membrane, then probes them with a labeled sequence; Southern blotting detects DNA, Northern detects RNA.

Show

A labeled probe binds only the membrane fragment complementary to it, revealing whether that sequence is present in the sample.

Watch for

Southern blots DNA and Northern blots RNA — Western blotting, a third technique, probes proteins instead of nucleic acids.
