The idea
Alternative splicing joins a pre-mRNA's exons in more than one combination, letting a single gene produce more than one protein.
In practice
A pre-mRNA with four exons can be spliced to include all four, or skip one, producing two mRNAs from the same gene.
Where people slip
Alternative splicing changes which exons are included, not the sequence within any exon — it recombines exons, not new coding.
